Czechia Butterfly Monitoring Scheme

Czech Butterfly Monitoring Scheme is a joint activity of Biology Centre Czech Academy of Sciences (Institute of Entomology), Agency of Nature Conservation (AOPK) and NGO Czech Butterfly Conservation (SOM,  http://www.lepidoptera-som.cz/) with support from the European Butterfly Monitoring Scheme (eBMS).

Till the year 2023, our transect monitoring was based on sending of Excel spreadsheet to the national coordinator, however, since 2023 we have moved to a completely online environment, to the website of eBMS. We are involved in Transect Monitoring, and we also support 15-min Counts, i.e. “Butterfly Quarter-hours”.

Methodologies

  • Transect Manual

transect boxDiscover the transect methodology for butterfly monitoring, the methodology used to monitor butterflies, and understand their conservation status. In this manual, you will learn the simple and basic rules to follow when performing a transect.

Currently, we are moving to a completely online environment under eBMS website, however, if you encounter problems, you can still use a Field Sheet (pdf English) for registering your data on the field.

  • 15-min Counts

There are other methodologies to count butterflies, like the 15-min Counts collected through the ButterflyCount mobile application, where your GPS tracks your route while counting butterflies for 15 minutes. All the data collected on this website will be shared with the Czech BMS and Czech Society for Butterflies and Moths (SOM)

  • eBMS Guidelines

Download the complete eBMS guide on this link (in English). It includes information on how to create new transects, edit your transects, add visits, and see where to generate the graphs of your data.

Some parts of the guide could change, due to the website being updated.
